Crushing can kill!

Crushing can kill!

CRUSHING CAN KILL – STAY ALERT, STAY ALIVEMobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) are often used to carry out work in areas where there are risks of crushing or entrapment to the platform occupants. Any activity involving MEWPs must be planned and properly managed. Failure to do so can result in injury or death of the platform occupants.MEWP incidents involving entrapment and crushing increased from 35 in 2021, to 46 in 2022*Hazards and risks Crushing hazards include overhead structures such as beams, low ceilings, doorways and other machines and equipment operating in the area. If a platform occupant becomes trapped or crushed against an external structure there is risk of injury or death. How to work safely Planning stage – identify hazards and thereafter, produce a risk assessment and safe system of work (SSoW). The SSoW should be shared with all those involved; operators, platform occupants, ground staff and other personnel. Everyone should be trained and familiarised with the MEWP being used. A Rescue Plan must be shared so everyone knows what to do in the event of a crushing or entrapment situation, including how to safely lower the MEWP platform. Operating stage – supervise to ensure the MEWP activity is conducted safely. If the nominated rescue person or any other personnel identifies a risk of crushing or entrapment, the activity should be stopped immediately and the MEWP platform safely lowered. Operators must not rely on secondary guarding (if fitted) and they and any other platform occupants must remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Pedestrian Control Mode* Some 3A and 1B (spider) type MEWPs are fitted with detachable platform controls for use of ‘Pedestrian Control’ mode. This is when the MEWP operator stands on the ground and walks alongside the MEWP operating it using the hand-held detachable platform controls. (Sometimes known as ‘wander leading’ or ‘dog walking’.) MEWPs without detachable platform controls must not be used for pedestrian control activities. If pedestrian control is used to manoeuvre the MEWP to its intended position, careful planning will reduce risk of injury to operators and other personnel. The operator may be in close proximity to the MEWP when using pedestrian control mode and should maximise the ‘stand-off’ distance between themselves and the MEWP to minimise the risk of crushing. *Pedestrian Control mode should only be used if overhead hazards are present and it is not possible to operate from the platform position. ResourcesGood practice guidance for reducing trapping/crushing injuries to people in MEWPsSafe use of MEWPs when using pedestrian controlsF1 Familiarisation leafletSafe Loading and Unloading of MEWPs on the Public HighwayAvoid Overhead Obstructions Toolbox TalkMEWP Rescue procedures Toolbox TalkMEWP Rescue Plan Toolbox TalkThe Pedestrian Control Of MEWPs Toolbox TalkThe Risks Of Operating MEWPs From The Ground Controls Toolbox TalkAndy Access: Danger Keep Well ClearAndy Access: Operating MEWPs From The Ground ControlsAndy Access: Overhead ObstructionsAndy Access: Platform OccupantsAndy Access: Caution When Loading And UnloadingAndy Access Short:Andy Access Short: Overhead Obstructions Remember! Entrapment or crushing can occur when MEWPs are in both the elevated and stowed positions. * According to data collated via IPAF’s global accident portal. Mon, 01/22/2024 – 11:36

In 2021, IPAF started the IPAF Women in Powered Access Initiative, to recognise and celebrate the contributions of women in powered access, as well as outline career pathways for women already in the industry and those looking to enter it.

So far, the working group of international IPAF members has: created profiles of women in many different roles across the sector; hosted the first women in powered access networking event; encouraged more female speakers and attendees to join informative industry events; and set up signposting pages with resources for women in the workplace and their managers. Ongoing projects include a mentoring scheme for women in the industry and scheduling a three-part live webinar series that explores a variety of key topics. The webinars are free to attend and are open to both members and non-members.

The second webinar in the series will focus on work-life balance. The webinar will cover experiences managing the balance, what a balance looks like, and whether is there pressure on women to succeed, as well as raising families. Back by popular demand, Ali Moore will also be hosting this webinar with a panel of three industry speakers.

Please note: this webinar is available in English only.

Speakers:

Ali Moore, Leadership Development Consultant, BeMoore
Caroline Woodward, Marketing Director, CMC UK
Pamela Penny, Marketing & Press, Vertikal Press
Marta Lucani, Regional Assistant – Italy, IPAF

IPAF extends its eLearning programme to China

Industry-leading eLearning for operators of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) has been launched in China by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF).

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2023, IPAF promotes the safe and effective use of powered access equipment worldwide and offers globally-recognised eLearning for MEWP operators.

The announcement of the extension of online training to the Chinese market came as delegates gathered in Shanghai for the International Rental Conference Asia and the Apex Asia trade show.

IPAF CEO and Managing Director Peter Douglas said: “China is the fastest-growing equipment market in the world, with a huge rental fleet comprising hundreds of thousands of machines, as well as nearly five million MEWP operators.

“A growing sector naturally means more operators, and it is very important to us that industry colleagues are equipped with the knowledge and skills to stay safe and work effectively.

“We hope that extending this training to China will herald a new era of safety in the country’s powered access sector.”

IPAF’s Chinese eLearning programme provides a flexible and enhanced online learning experience for MEWP operators.

In China, the training platform will be offered via the WeChat app, allowing users to access training anytime and anywhere. The first three modules are offered free of charge at the point of registration.

The MEWP Operator programme is available for all MEWP categories (1a, 1b, 3a, 3b) and takes around three hours to complete. The eLearning is broken down into manageable sections that you can complete at your own pace and can save and resume your training at any time.

Remote learning offers the same high-quality theory training as in the classroom and can be completed on a range of devices, at a pace chosen by the trainee.

The eLearning system uses sophisticated facial recognition to confirm the candidate’s identity and prevent fraudulent qualifications. Courses can only be run on tablets and computers equipped with a camera.

IPAF China Regional Manager Tim Mo said: “Offering the training in Chinese will help to ensure that the important safety principles covered by the programme are fully understood and embedded in the workforce.

“As the Chinese equipment market continues to grow, it is essential that industry takes a lead in ensuring safety and providing access to high-quality training.

“Members of the global workforce are positive about IPAF’s training, with more than 500 new learners signing up each week. We hope this trend will continue in China thanks to this new training provision.”

MEWP manufacturers Sinoboom and Haulotte Shanghai have already signed up as the first supporters of the eLearning programme in China. IPAF hopes and believes more and more parties will join.

Alongside the new eLearning provision, IPAF currently has 10 approved training centres in China, and hopes the new online provision will encourage more to open in the next five years.

In addition to Chinese, the IPAF MEWP Operator eLearning training course is available in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
