Users must check ground conditions as part of a site assessment to identify potential hazards, ensure correct MEWP selection, develop risk-control measures, and to establish any considerations to take into account before using the machine. Operators should be sure that these checks have been done correctly prior to machine use on any task.

Using a MEWP requires a thorough risk assessment, including ground conditions of the area where you will operate and all ground you will travel on with the MEWP before getting to the final work area. Assessing ground conditions correctly will include but not be limited to the type and the angle of surface, evenness of the terrain and any hazards or potential weak-spots, visible or hidden (consider for instance underground services or drainage systems).

Always factor ground conditions into your MEWP selection to ensure it is correct for the task. Ensure the MEWP has the correct tyres or tracks, is not too heavy and can operate on or over the terrain and/or on any incline. Do not proceed to use a MEWP if you are not certain it is suitable for the ground conditions.
